Understanding product configurators
What is a product configurator and why would my company need one?
A product configurator is software that makes it possible to create customised products quickly by automating every step of the process: selecting product properties, calculating price and generating CAD drawings, quotations and production documents. If your company sells products that are adapted to each customer, a configurator replaces the slow manual work between sales and engineering with a rule-based system that does the job in minutes instead of days.
What is the difference between a sales configurator, a product configurator and a 3D configurator?
A sales configurator supports the sales process, helping customers and salespeople create customer-specific quotations by combining product choices, prices and availability in an intuitive, usually web-based interface. A product configurator is more technical and handles the rules that guarantee combinations are technically correct; it is used by engineers, designers and technical sales, and integrates with CAD, PDM and ERP systems. A 3D configurator is an interactive visualisation tool where the user sees and adjusts the product in real time in a rotatable, zoomable 3D model, and it can be integrated with both of the others.
What does CPQ mean and is it relevant to my company?
CPQ stands for Configure, Price, Quote. It describes software that automates the entire process of configuring products, calculating prices and producing quotation documents. CPQ is particularly useful for companies with complex products involving many choices and rules, and with a large sales organisation or customer base.
What is the difference between ETO and CTO, and how does a configurator change it?
ETO (Engineer To Order) means engineers must be heavily involved in the design work for every customised product. CTO (Configure To Order) lets the customer configure and order without engineers being involved, with the product manufactured after the order is placed. A configurator is what makes the move from ETO to CTO possible, by encoding your product rules so that valid configurations can be created automatically.
What KonfigDesign offers
What does KonfigDesign do?
KonfigDesign specialises in developing tailored product configurators for manufacturing companies. We offer both advisory work — mapping needs, defining product rules and process guidance — and implementation of configurator software. We are a reseller and implementation partner for three specialised platforms: RuleDesigner, DynaMaker and Elfsquad.
Which platforms does KonfigDesign work with, and how do they differ?
RuleDesigner Configurator is an on-premise Windows platform with a low-code editor for configuration processes and automation, integrating with CAD (SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor, NX), Office applications, databases, web services and ERP systems; we are the authorised reseller in Sweden and licences can be purchased or taken as an annual subscription. Elfsquad is a cloud-based SaaS CPQ system where you maintain your own product rules, prices and quotation templates, with multilingual configuration management, dynamic pricing and a Showroom feature for publishing configurators on the web. DynaMaker is a cloud-based SaaS platform for parametric 3D design automation that runs in the browser and generates PDF drawings, STEP files, IFC files and bills of material.
Does KonfigDesign build its own software from scratch?
No. We deliberately work with established, adaptable platforms rather than building our own programs or relying on rigid standard systems. RuleDesigner, DynaMaker and Elfsquad make it possible to start small and fast, scale up step by step, and avoid the maintenance burden of fully bespoke systems.
The process — working with us
What does the process look like from start to finish?
We follow a three-phase model. Phase 1, Introduction (free of charge): you describe your current situation and expectations, we suggest how we can help, show relevant customer cases and give preliminary licence costs and a rough time estimate. Phase 2, Kickstart (fixed price): a time-limited set of workshops covering process mapping, prototype development and definition of product rules, delivering a solution proposal, cost proposal, rough project plan and often a working prototype. Phase 3, Project (agile development): the build itself, in stages with close and regular contact, system training, system configuration, installations and releases in small steps.
What is a Kickstart and what do I get out of it?
The Kickstart is a structured first step at a fixed price. It usually includes documenting your product rules in a configurator matrix, sketching user interfaces, validating the capability of the system and sometimes building a limited pilot or prototype. After the Kickstart we deliver a concrete business proposal with specified licence costs and consulting time estimates.
What is a configurator matrix?
It is the documented framework for your product rules. It captures which choices are available and in what order, the options for each choice, which choices exclude or require others, and which product properties need to be calculated dynamically. This document becomes the basis for building your configurator.
Is the initial consultation free?
Yes. The introduction phase, where we get to know your situation and propose an approach, is free of charge.
How quickly can I have a working configurator?
For 3D configurators specifically we have a well-established approach for producing a first version within a month. The total timeline depends on your product complexity and the scope of the solution, but the step-by-step approach means you receive working deliveries continuously instead of waiting for a complete system.
Cost and licensing
What does a configurator project cost?
We do not publish fixed prices because every customer case is unique — which systems are needed and how long development takes depends on your products and processes. What we do offer is a clear cost structure: the introduction is free, the Kickstart is fixed price, and the project phase comes with a detailed business proposal specifying licence fees and consulting hours once the Kickstart is complete.
What licensing models are available?
It depends on the platform. RuleDesigner offers both purchase and annual subscription for its on-premise licence. Elfsquad and DynaMaker are cloud-based SaaS with annual subscriptions. All three platforms offer demo licences so you can evaluate them before deciding.
Can I start small and scale up later?
Yes. That is central to our philosophy. The platforms we work with are made so you can start at a small scale without long development times, and then scale up to larger solutions as the need grows.
Technical questions
Can the configurator be integrated with our ERP system?
Yes. We have particular experience with Monitor ERP via its API: fetching customer data, creating quotations after configuration, updating articles, performing bulk article updates and automating article preparation. The platforms also support integration with other ERP systems via REST APIs, file transfers and SQL databases.
Which CAD systems are supported?
Primarily SolidWorks, Solid Edge and Inventor. Through RuleDesigner, NX and other CAD systems are also supported. CAD automation — automatically generating 2D drawings and 3D models from a configuration — is a core capability.
What file formats can a configurator produce?
Depending on platform and setup: PDF drawings, STEP files (neutral 3D format), IFC files (BIM), bills of material, product specifications, product manuals and customised quotation documents. RuleDesigner can also generate output through Word and Excel templates.
Can the configurator be embedded on our website?
Yes. RuleDesigner, DynaMaker and Elfsquad all support web-based configurators that can be embedded in your existing website. Elfsquad has a Showroom feature for publishing configurators publicly, and DynaMaker is built specifically to run in the browser and integrate with websites and e-commerce platforms.
Is there support for multiple languages in international sales?
Yes. Elfsquad has built-in multilingual configuration management, and RuleDesigner and DynaMaker support phrase registers with translations into several languages. In the Movomech customer case, the same web-based configurator is used by salespeople worldwide.
Can our salespeople use the system anywhere in the world?
Yes. The web-based interfaces of Elfsquad, RuleDesigner and DynaMaker give global access through a browser. The Movomech and Voith Turbo Safeset cases both describe sales teams around the world using the same configurator system.
What is the difference between cloud-based and on-premise installation?
Elfsquad and DynaMaker are cloud-based (SaaS): no local installation is required, you access them through the browser and the vendor handles hosting and updates. RuleDesigner is an on-premise solution installed on Windows workstations or servers. We cooperate with Internetport for hosted server environments, which reduces the burden of running your own server operations.
Real results
What kinds of companies have implemented configurators with KonfigDesign?
Documented customer cases include Voith Turbo Safeset in Hudiksvall (torque limiters and safety couplings, a RuleDesigner configurator for global sales, CAD automation and automated quotation generation), Movomech (lifting aids and rail systems, a CPQ system with RuleDesigner and DynaMaker used by salespeople globally), Roca Industry (3D configurators for customer-facing product visualisation and web shop ordering), Repus Ventilation (a RuleDesigner-based system with a public website configurator, MagiCad integration in Revit and an internal quotation system, all driven by the same product rules) and Cibes (lift manufacturer using Elfsquad CPQ with Monitor ERP integration).
What concrete benefits have these companies seen?
Based on customer quotes and cases: salespeople produce customised quotations in seconds instead of days, including attached 3D models and documents; engineering departments free up significant time from repetitive drawing work; quotation hit rates improve because customers get answers faster; the risk of human error falls because the system enforces the product rules; and companies with international sales teams have a single system with consistent rules and current prices.
